Hydrogen Energy and Hydrogen Storage

主讲人简介:Dr. Hai-Wen Li is a Professor at Kyushu University. From 2005 to 2011, he worked as Postdoc, JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow and Assistant Professor at Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University. From 2011 to 2020, he served as an Associate Professor at International Research Center for Hydrogen Energy and International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research, Kyushu University. His research activities mainly focus on the development of advanced materials and systems for hydrogen storage and energy storage.

内容摘要:Hydrogen can be produced from water electrolysis with renewable electricity, and it generates electricity through fuel cell or combustion without CO2 emission. Hydrogen energy, therefore, has been widely accepted as an important solution to achieve energy security, reduce CO2 emissions and promote sustainable economic development. The energy density of hydrogen per unit volume at ambient temperature and pressure is as low as 1/3400 of gasoline, which means that storage and transportation of hydrogen in a limited space is a big challenge. Therefore, development of hydrogen storage technologies is a key issue for realizing the sustainable hydrogen economy. The energy density of hydrogen can be largely increased by using compression (70 MPa) or liquefaction techniques (-253 °C), nevertheless, the volumetric density can not exceed 70 kg H2 m-3 in principle due to the repulsive forces between hydrogen molecules. Distinct from these techniques, metal or complex hydrides materials which store atomic hydrogen, reveals high potential use for hydrogen storage. Liquid organic hydride carrier and ammonia that can use the existed infrastructure are also candidate methods for large scale hydrogen transport. This lecture will focus on the progress and perspectives of main hydrogen storage technologies.
